Starshade Edge Coatings

ZeCoat founder David Sheikh developed an ultra-black coating of layered thin metal and glass films that traps light in nanoscale cavities; it is extremely thin and durable, roughly 100 times thinner than earlier coatings tested for starshades. In JPL tests on starshade edge prototypes, the coating reduced reflected light by about a factor of 20, enough to help a telescope image exoplanets.
- Reflectance Goal: Avg. R <1.5% and max R <2.4% from 450–850 nm
